Carnival Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Welcome to the world of magic, transformation and joy – to at least three centuries old Santa Cruz Carnival, which is recognized as the second largest Carnival in the world after the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tenerife; from year to year, thousands of tourists from all over the world visit the Carnival.

The Carnival is being celebrated every year since the 17th century when men used to dress up like women and women like men, people wore colourful masks, sang and danced. In the 18th century a ban to use masks during the celebrations was issued, but in reality, it was not taken into consideration. The Carnival was prohibited in the 20th century (during the regime of General Franco), but the ban was not put into action. Like today, the Carnival was celebrated both in cities and in different villages, but the main event always took place in the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz.

The Carnival lasts for one month and the final procession takes place every year on Tuesday, the burning of sardines, a symbol of deliverance from all old and ugly and transformation of society, on Ash Wednesday.

Tenerife all excursions invites every single visitor of the island to join us for the Carnival final procession and a firework at the 21st of February, when a lot of tourist buses accompanied by tour guides speaking different languages are coming to Santa Cruz.
